Wicklow Town
Wicklow Town is an old Harbour town, steeped in history, and the ruin of the old Anglo-Norse fortress still sits on the cliff, This is known as “The Black Castle “ and dates back to 1170-1200. The town is served by a regular bus and train service from Dublin. There are many bars and restaurants in the town catering for a variety of tastes.
In August there is a local festival . “The Wicklow Regatta festival” one of the oldest festivals in Ireland, which guarantees a great time for all. Also, during the summer, from time to time ,different events take place, which brings a great buzz to the town. One of the main attractions of the town is the Wicklow Historic Gaol, a museum of Wicklows’ past history. (www.wicklowhistoricgaol.com). The tour through the gaol is a compelling experience told through live re-enactment and audio-visual material. It lets one live the experience of the inmates jailed under cruel, horrific conditions, through the penal times and during the famine, before being shipped to Australia.
Mount Usher Gardens
To the north, approx 6klms from Wicklow Town, we have Mount Usher Gardens which are laid out on the banks of the Vartry River. Those are beautiful gardens designed in the Robinsonian style, where plants and trees have been introduced from all over the globe and planted in harmony with woodland and shade loving plants. Like all great Irish gardens Mount Usher offers varying pleasure for the different seasons. Rhododendrons in Spring, blaze of colour in Summer and wistful tints of rustic gold in Autumn all elegantly set off by the crystal waters of the river.. In addition Mount Usher offers home produced refreshments in their tearooms, and a Shopping Courtyard.
Beaches
To the South we have beautiful beaches, which include Brittas Bay.and Silver Strand. There are many lovely walks from the town. You can take a cliff walk and visit the Lighthouses or you can go stroll along the coast and take in the nature reserve on the Murrough.
Wicklow County is known as the “Garden of Ireland“ which is no surprise because of the natural beauty and lushness of the area. There are many beautiful places within easy driving reach, Glendalough and Powerscourt Gardens and Devils Glen are just some. There are also some fine Houses with great art collections these include Russborough and Avondale Houses.
Wicklow is also well known for its many fine Golf courses which include the famous Druids Glen and the European.
Drom Ard is Situated just off the N11 motorway. It is an ideal base if you are heading South, or indeed it is a great stopover if heading back to the Airport as we are about 1hour driving time from Dublin Airport. Wexford and Dublin City are also about one hours’ driving time away.
